Today, Xiaomi announced flagship, which many fans of Chinese smartphones has pinned great hopes. A year and a half ago, the Mi Note lineup has raised the bar of the flagships of Xiaomi to a new level, providing not only high-end chipset, but Hi-Fi sound, original at the time of 3D glass and a QHD screen in the Pro version (there was a bamboo back). Then Mi Note and Mi Note Pro are the only flagships of the year, and because they had to look differently than on Mi Note 2, which became the fourth in the line of premium devices Xiaomi 2016 (and because the next one was presented Mi and Mix). The basis of positioning the Mi Note 2 in the background the others were “flexible” OLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a 23-Megapixel camera Sony IMX318 with the support of “hardware-electronic stability” when shooting 4K video. Sounds great, but at the first acquaintance with Mi Note 2 there are a number of questions to the manufacturer. So let’s understand, what’s wrong with Xiaomi Mi Note 2.
Design
Perhaps any smartphone Xiaomi primarily criticized design. Byudzhetkam Redmi series to forgive a lot, but not the flagships. Of course, the curved display of a priori refers to the Samsung smartphones, but Xiaomi could and had to make a touch of own creativity in this concept. For example, equipping Mi Note 2 with a fingerprint scanner in the style of Mi5S (Sense ID “under glass”) or even relegate it to the back panel. By the way, it would change lasting Association with the Lumia (unattractive located on the rear surface of the rear chamber) or ZUK (like the bezel). However, this time, as always, is very subjective.
Flexible curved display
At the presentation of Xiaomi paid special attention to the “flexible” OLED display, covered with curved 3D glass. The obvious fact is that the “flexibility” of the display nothing useful for the user is not responsible. To bend this screen will not work (glass is still glass), and a method of producing a curved brim, you will agree, few people care about. In addition, Xiaomi not a word is said about the appointment of the curved edges. Samsung in its time to devote a separate block, and on Mi Note 2 – not a word. It seems that the situation is repeated with a 3D Touch on Mi5S, the use of which is not at all. Moreover, Xiaomi failed to win in the dimensions due to the use of the curved screen. For comparison, Galaxy Note 7, with a 5.7" Super AMOLED panel has dimensions 153,5 x 73,9 x 7.9 mm whereas the Mi Note 2 in the same diagonal line – 156,2 x 77,3 x 7.6 mm. As the saying goes, feel the difference.
Camera
All four of the flagship 2016 have different camera modules, different resolution, different pixel size and so on. So, Mi5 has suggested a 16-Megapixel camera, Mi5S – 12-MP sensor with a 1.55-µm pixels and Mi5S Plus – dual module 13-MP. In Mi Note 2 installed the 23 MP sensor IMX318 with electronic stabilization. Why Xiaomi continues these searches is unclear. Many predicted Mi Note 2 is more cool dual camera, Qualcomm developing technology, Clear Sight, but instead to hear the claim of users to Mi5S lack of optical image stabilization, the company introduces yet another platform. Thus, programmers now have to work in four directions at the same time to achieve the maximum and to improve the capabilities of the flagship (!) cameras smartphones Mi-series, instead bring to mind one or two cameras. Moreover, even Mi5, announced in February, part of the photo and video is far from perfect.
Hardware-based and Hi-Fi
Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has received OLED-display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. And it’s at a diagonal of 5.7". To argue about the practical application of QHD resolution for a long time, however, the flagship standard for this category of smartphones is 2560 x 1440 pixels. Especially with the availability of the range of Chinese brand already a few VR-products where high resolution plays an important role, and sufficiently capacious battery – few can boast 4070 mAh battery with QHD display. Obviously, Xiaomi has decided to save. Also the matter of Hi-Fi DACS. The first generation Mi Note could boast of chip ESS ES9018K2M, but today the novelty has received a Qualcomm Aqstic. Interestingly, he had good quality sound to Galaxy Note 7 (American version), but skoropostizhno the demise of the latter did not allow to fully assess the capabilities of a Hi-Fi chip. Perhaps the question of cost and here played a role.
Price
Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will be priced at 2799, 3299 and 3499 yuan (25,7, to 30.3 and 32.2 thousand rubles) for version 4/64 GB, 6/128 6/128 GB and GB international networks. Mi5S Plus top-end configuration comes with the same amount of memory, chipset, screen (size and resolution) and comparable dimensions, but with a much lower price tag of 2599 yuan (23.9 per thousand). Whether to pay more for the dubious purpose curved edge? But adding to Mi5S Plus Hi-Fi DAC would be one fully balanced device, to which alternative, given the absence in this year’s musical flagship Meizu on Exynos, almost would not be.
eventually, the Xiaomi born another controversial device, which definitely has a right to exist, but at the same time could be better if Xiaomi did not try to rattle the specs and chase the top practices of other producers (3D Touch and edge display is best to measure). She didn’t have to try to grasp the immensity, flooding the market one dimensional models. Age and the possibility of Xiaomi allow her to move away from “Chinese” to find its own form. This is especially important if Xiaomi plans to one day conquer the American and European market, not to fight for the championship in native walls with OPPO and Vivo. A good step in this direction could be Mi Mix, but that’s another story.
