Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 is still the company’s most current “phablet” on the market (that’s a cross between phone and tablet, in case you missed it). The Korean smartphone maker is expected to launch its follow up Galaxy Note 3 sometime in 2013, but we’re still pretty big fans of the Note 2.
So, while we’re waiting to see what kind of new features Samsung plans to include in its next-generation phablet, we thought we’d revisit some of our favorite Galaxy Note 2 apps. So power up your phone, grab your S Pen and let this list help you get to know your phone all over again.
But before we get into it, let’s take a look at why the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been so well received. In our official review , we said:
“The Galaxy Note 2 is a great smartphone because its performance is just ridiculous, battery life is great, reading and consuming multimedia content is great. The size is a pain in the rear sometimes and you really have to decide if all the benefits of the size outweighs the sacrifices you’ll have to make. If you can get over the size, buy it. It’s pretty good. “
And now for the apps:
Frankly, we don’t think any device – Android and iOS included – should be without Flipboard. This slick news reading tool is clean, gorgeous and completely customizable. You can access different stories by flipping (hence the name) through several different boards. Each board represents a different news category, website, blog or social network. Flipboard offers up several topics for you to choose from and it automatically pulls the top stories from your Facebook and Twitter accounts (after you give it permission).
Pocket is our go-to pick for Android read-it-later apps, and we love how it makes use of the extra real estate on Samsung’s Note 2. With the simple tap of a button you can save any news story, blog post or video and get back to it when the time is right.
Astrid Tasks & To-do list
Need to keep track of everything ever? You can finally ditch those stuffy old datebooks and magnetic notepads. Astrid Tasks is the ultimate appointment-setting and list-making app for Android.
Draw Something Free
Draw Something isn’t quite as hyped now as when it first hit, but despite the lack of buzz lately it’s still a must for the Note 2 (namely because of the S Pen, which makes it easier to add detail to your quirky drawings). Keep this app handy for all of those times you’re stuck waiting in line at the market or killing time between appointments. You’ll also be able to see which of your Facebook friends uses Draw Something and challenge them to a round or two.
Netflix
Popular video streaming service Netflix has an Android app that works perfectly with your Note 2. And the phone’s beefy screen size makes for far better viewing than its smaller counterparts. The app is free to download, and Netflix is ??currently offering a month-long trial period at no cost for new subscribers. After that, the average monthly fee is around $ 10.
Soonr Scribble
This cloud-based app lets you scribble (obviously, right?) until your heart’s content. Designed with the Note’s S Pen in mind, you can sketch out ideas and jot down thoughts far faster than you would with your fingers. Soonr Scribble also backs up your files automatically and allows you to share, sync and edit from any device.
Catch notes
Catch is another note-taking app and its goal is to help you never miss an idea. It has a very interesting and pleasing user interface that really scales up well to the size of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and it’s a breeze to organize and structure all of your ideas.
Samsung Premium Suite
Since the Galaxy Note 2 was first introduced, Samsung has also brought out the Premium Suite, which it said will help you get the “most of mobile living.” This includes a new S Memo widget that makes it easier to hand-write notes. The My Story app lets users create personalized stories with text, handwriting, 3D animations and more. The Premium Suite includes many other features, so be sure to download it immediately.
Fruit Ninja
This is a relatively older game but it’s a classic for a reason. Fruit Ninja has a simple goal: slice as much fruit as possible and avoid the bombs. On the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, you can even use the S Pen to squash those fruits. You can buy a version for $ 1.22 or you can try out the free version but you’ll have to face some ads.
