Phablets have rapidly increased in popularity over the last few years and Samsung is the undisputed king of the market. LG is looking to change that with its new G Pro 2, but can it really do enough to top the mighty Samsung Galaxy Note 3? Read on to find out.
LG G Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Build quality
The LG G Pro 2 has a plastic body, but it at least looks fairly classy and solid. Its rear buttons are divisive, on the one hand they’re a bit of an eyesore but on the other hand they do make the phone a little easier to use than most handsets are. At 157.9 x 81.9 x 8.3mm it isn’t much larger than it needs to be to contain its screen and it’s fairly slim too, while its weight of 172g feels about right for a phablet.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a slightly more attractive faux-leather back, though while it’s visually convincing it doesn’t feel particularly like leather. It’s 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3mm, which makes it just as slim as the G Pro 2 and slightly smaller, but then the screen is slightly smaller too. It’s marginally lighter at 168g, but it’s not a difference you’ll notice. All in all there’s little to choose between the two when it comes to build quality.
LG G Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Display
The LG G Pro 2 has a 5.9 inch 1080 x 1920 display with a pixel density of 373 pixels per inch. It’s not quite the sharpest screen on the market but it still produces sharp, natural images.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a 5.7 inch 1080 x 1920 display with a pixel density of 386 pixels per inch. It has a marginally higher pixel density then, but not so you’d notice. However images are also slightly brighter and richer than on the LG G Pro 2. On the other hand the Note 3 has a slightly smaller screen than the G Pro 2, but as the quality is better we have to give it the edge.
LG G Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Power
The LG G Pro 2 has a powerful 2.26 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 3GB of RAM, which basically makes it one of the most powerful phones around. It’s seriously fast and isn’t likely to feel too outdated for years.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is similarly powerful thanks to its 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. In fact on paper it’s marginally more powerful, but in real terms there shouldn’t be any noticeable difference.
LG G Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Camera
Both the LG G Pro 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 have 13 megapixel cameras and both should be capable of taking great photos. However the LG G Pro 2 has an edge thanks to Optical Image Stabilisation Plus, which reduces blur and ensures it can take better low light photos. Both cameras can also shoot 2160p video at 30fps and the LG G Pro 2 has a 2.1 megapixel front facing camera while the Galaxy Note 3 has a 2 megapixel one.
LG G Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Battery life, memory and connectivity
Both the LG G Pro 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 have 3200 mAh batteries. The Note 3 can manage up to 420 hours of standby time or up to 21 hours of talk time. Unfortunately LG hasn’t released any stats on the G Pro 2′s battery life yet, so it’s hard to say which of the two is better, but with similar screens and similar amounts of power we’d expect battery life to be similar too.
The LG G Pro 2 comes with 32GB of built in storage while the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 comes with a choice of 16, 32 or 64GB of storage. As both also have a microSD card slot that’s a win for the Galaxy Note 3.
For connectivity options both the LG G Pro 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 support Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, but the Galaxy Note 3 also supports infrared, which the G Pro 2 doesn’t appear to, or at least LG haven’t announced that it does anyway.
LG G Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Conclusion
The LG Pro 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are remarkably similar phones. They have a similar build quality, almost identical amounts of power, the same megapixel main cameras and the same battery sizes.
There are a few small differences to pick at, for example the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a slightly smaller but higher quality screen and more storage potential while the LG G Pro 2 is likely to have a marginally better camera thanks to the inclusion of Optical Image Stabilisation Plus.
If we had to choose a winner we’d give the LG G Pro 2 the edge, thanks to slightly more innovation, with the likes of the easily accessible rear buttons and being able to double tap the screen to turn it on. Of course price will also be a factor and LG is yet to confirm what it will sell the G Pro 2 for, but assuming it’s similar or lower in price to the Galaxy Note 3 it should be the one to go for.
Unfortunately because it’s so similar it’s also likely to struggle against the Note 3 as Samsung and its Note range are by far the more recognisable brand.
