UC Irvine is investigating a note slipped under the door of a freshman’s dorm room on Tuesday night that read “Go back 2 Africa slave.”
The note was slipped under the door of freshman Charity Lyons, who is just finishing up her first year at UC Irvine, according to a San Diego ABC affiliate 10 News (h / t OC Weekly). Lyons made the Deans’ List and is on the school’s track team. It’s not the first incident of racism she encountered on campus: Lyons’ mother Stephanie Lyons noted that just the week before, someone-an Asian student-called her daughter the N-word.
Because of these two incidents, Lyons has serious doubts about sending her daughter back to the UC Irvine campus in the fall: “If they were brave enough to put that note there, who knows what extent they’ll go to next time . “
This incident comes on the heels of a controversial video put together by an Asian frat on campus. A member of Lambda Theta Delta dressed up in blackface for a video set to “Suit & Tie.” The fraternity voluntarily suspended itself until Fall 2014.
UC Irvine spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon told 10News that the school is investigating both the video and Lyons’ note. She told the TV station, “It’s an indication that we have some work to do in helping our students and our entire campus community understand and value the differences we have.”
Stephanie Lyons told 10 News, “I hurt for my daughter because I feel like we should be past this and there’s no justification for them to be mean and be like this.”
